Barbells and dumbbells come in various sizes. As I recomend the power rack this means I also have to advise getting a 7-foot straight Olympic bar. This is necessary as the supports of the power rack are wide and a lesser bar would not fit properly. If you are serious about weights you will end up choosing the above two items, but only if you believe my recommendations, or once you have done more research elsewhere. If you do buy an Olympic bar you will need to buy Olympic (2-inch diameter hole) weight plates.

Dumbbells give us the real poser. Choosing the right dumbbells often means you have to choose different sized (in terms of the central hole) weight plates. Mind you dumbbells are nice to have, but are they really necessary as you can do the BIG compound exercises with a barbell? Personally I think that a set of dumbbells should be on a perfect shopping list if your budget permits. There are what I consider a few important additional exercises that should be added by using dumbbells, though because the amount weight used is relatively low, the right set of dumbbells is not that expensive.
