Brawn and Beyond Brawn by Stuart McRobert

Brawn and Beyond Brawn by Stuart McRobert

Firstly, Brawn is the most readable book and Beyond Brawn has the most detail, though is a little disjointed and repeats itself. Both books say pretty much the same thing, but Beyond Brawn has more detail especially for exercise selection. Stuart starts by giving you a selection of weight lifting routines for you to choose from, AND he also gives you the know-how to adapt these routines so that you can fine-tune your very own workouts.

In both these books Stuart talks mainly about hardgainers (those that struggle to put on muscle) and compares these with the drug taking (steroids) genetically gifted – the monsters of the body building world. The book discusses the typical expectations for “normal” people in terms of strength and size, and goes into some detail about the exercise equipment that you’ll need too.

The books focus on getting strong in the big multi-joint compound exercises, such as the squat, deadlift, bench press, shoulder press, etc and prescribe steady increments. There is a good section on nutrition though not as good as it could be.

I have spent years in the gym doing whole body workouts three times a week and all I ever achieved was sore joints, sore muscles, cramps, totally knackered and although I got toned I experienced zero growth. When I got these books and then the gym equipment that Stuart recommends I was able to put some serious effort in training each muscle group once per week and I made rapid gains in both strength and size. I had to buy jeans with more legroom and I needed new shirts – it definitely works!

Stuart now has a new book out – Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body. I don’t have this book (as I have three separate books of his), but it is ONE book that includes Brawn, Beyond Brawn, Further Brawn and The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique, so if you decide to buy a book of his, you only need to buy this one. Stuart says the section on weight training technique has been revised and more exercises added, and text improved, so I think I may get it myself, just for the updates!
