Gripper and Grip Machines

Gripper and Grip Machines

If you lift weights your grip will get stronger. However, there are some exercises where grip strength can cause a work-set to end prematurely thus not enabling you to achieve you goals on that set, for example deadlifts and wide-arm pull ups.

Many people solve this problem by buying grip aids that assist by passing some of the load onto your wrists, in a kind of way that tries to pull your hand off. This is ok if you choose that way, but whyy not just develop a strong grip?

There are weight machines out there that consists of two bars: a fixed bar and a moveable loaded bar where you just squeeze the bars together. The great thing about these is that they allow you to add weight in a nice progressive many and still get full range of movement. The downside is that these machine can be a little expensive for what they are. They are fine in a commercial gym, but not necessarily so in a home gym. Again the choice is yours.

An alternative to a grip machine is a heavy duty gripper. Trouble is you will need 3, maybe 4 of these. They are simple to use - you just squeeze the handles together! These tend to be rated - that is a "number 1" will be easier than a "number 2", etc, as per the Captains of Crush range. The main disadvantage of these is that the progression can be in large jumps, and when you step up to the next one you might not be able to close it fully and use the full range of motion.

The Captains of Crush range have developed some in between steps and there is also a "mini" gripper that have a slight resistance that can be added alongside a gripper when training your grip. It is unlikely that you would need to buy a whole set (which could be expensive). A very strong person that deadlifts 600lbs (for reps, not singles) might need the upper end of a set of gripper, whereas someone lifting for a sport would only need the lower end of a set. A serious weight lifter deadlifting say 400-500lbs (for reps, not singles) would require the middle range of a set.
