Weight Plates and Weight Sets

I shall start by getting the most important message across - choose the Olympic size (2 inch diameter hole) weight plates for your barbell if you have decided to get a power rack because you will need a 7-foot Olympic bar to fit it and the diameter of this is two-inches at the place where you put the weight on! In my opinion the 7-foot Olympic bar is an essential piece of equipment for your gym.

Now, choosing an Olympic bar means you will need Olympic sized weight plates (2 inch diameter hole) to fit on the ends. The dumbbells you choose could mean different sized weight plates. You can buy dumbbells with Olympic ends for the larger holed plates but these can be a bit hazardous if you want to perform any pressing. Olympic dumbbell handles tend to be as expensive as about 50kg of standard plates with standard dumbbell handles.

Well, what can I say about weight plates? There is not a lot to say here really - they are flat(ish), usually circular plates of various size and weight and they tend to have a hole in the centre. There are two sizes of holes: standard (1 inch hole) and Olympic (2 inch hole). There are a few materials used: metal plates, metal covered with rubber and solid rubber. Some plates incorporate handles and have a slightly more interesting shape though only slightly modified from circular.
